Vintage Classroom Homeschool

Recently, I had a dream that my hubby bought us this amazing home with an adorable vintage classroom tucked away on one side of the house. When I woke up, reality set in that I don’t own this home (yet), and I still need a homeschool room in my current, but also lovely home. Given that I already have a Teal Bird home office that I am not willing to share, homeschool room currently has no room.

So, to make room for homeschool, we turned one corner of our large living space into a homeschool area that works with the existing furniture in our home.

These vintage Heywood Wakefield school chairs ($100 off Craigslist) were my first purchase a year ago and the inspiration for our homeschool room. The hutch is a $25 yard sale find that was being under-utilized in the space until it became the big storage and display space for the corner. A $3 thrift store bookshelf was perfect for the little reading corner. My husband suggested that I add some Teal Bird Flair with custom designed art posters and a color chart clock.

My favorite element in the space is a large DIY blackboard inspired by an early century slate blackboard with a $200 price tag that made my hubby say, “no way, let’s make it!” So we did. The next day, on the side of the road, we found some old, wooden closet doors that we used as the frame. We then covered a sheet of mdf (left over from a previous project) with chalkboard paint. The $10 can of paint happened to be our only cost for the project.

I’m still looking for the perfect abacus, a vintage ruler lamp shade, and cute little yellow school bus, but overall, I am excited about how this little corner is turning out.
